Bob Dylan!
Who is Bob Dylan?Bob Dylan is a folk rock songwriter and singer and artist who was born on 24th May 1941in Duluth, this is located within Minnesota, America. His real name is Robert Allen Zimmerman but took Bob Dylan as his stage name. He was born within a Jewish family but never became too religious as he became more of a free soul, what I mean by this is that he experiment within other religions helping him to build his knowledge. When Bob Dylan was in college he decided to drop out at the end of his freshman year so that he could go to New York to continue with his music career, this was influenced when he went to a camp and learnt to play the guitar and harmonica together and sometimes keyboard.

Due to this the family had to move back to Beatrice’s home town where Bob Dylan spent the rest of his childhood experimenting with music as he formed bands within his years of high school. His Music? Most of his music before the 1960’s weren’t as popular as they were within the 1960’s, this is because in 1962 Dylan made his first album where he developed his own genre of protest songs, he was greatly influences by his observations and opinions on the injustice the American government were carrying out, this had affected society in many ways. (See front page). But because of this new genre, Bob Dylan became the ‘voice’ of America as he was famously known for making anti-establishment songs, along with Elvis Presley.
Blowin In the Wind and The Times Are A Changing and many of his others songs became anthems for the US Civil Rights and Anti War Movements. This goes back to what I mentioned before on the first page as how music helps us feel the way we are suppose to within a certain situation. These songs related to the public which caused them to use these songs within their movements. |
Influences/ The affect of the 1960's
Many of his songs where dedicated to incidents where people have died because of politics. Also along with how unfair the government was to the public, especially according to the colour of their skin and the class system they were in. For example the death of John Kennedy, Civil Rights Movement, social changes including the Hippies and psychedelic lifestyle and the fact that the ‘American Dream’ doesn't exist in the real world but within a dream, were just a few events that influenced Bob Dylan to write his music.
In a bubble, you can start to see why politics had an effect on music; however the affect had more of a positive outcome as it helped many musicians to write their music as well as developing new styles of music. Politics had effected the economy, which lead them to rebel against the government, during the rebellion the public used music to express their feelings, and this helped to change many government policies. Is another way of showing how politics effect music.
